EXPERTS
Taosheng Huang, M.D., Ph.D.
FOUNDING BOARD DIRECTOR

ISRG

Professor Huang is the Chief of Genetics for Pediatrics at SUNY Buffalo, Director of Genetics & Metabolism at Oishei Children’s Hospital. His research focuses on discovering novel genes associated with mitochondrial diseases. In recent years, his group has identified many nuclear genes related to mitochondrial disease and new mtDNA mutations. For novel disease-causing genes, his group has also established and characterized disease-causing genes with both an iPS cell model and a CRISPR/Cas9-produced mouse model for a better understanding of the molecular basis of pathogenesis and to develop treatments such as gene therapy. His research on mitochondrial replacement therapy was among the top 10 Science stories of 2016, and the discovery of biparental mtDNA inheritance was also ranked in the top 10 publications from 2019 by Nature. Now his laboratory also applies the discoveries from rare genetic diseases to more common diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and preterm birth, and even to the biological basis of the aging process itself. He was the immediate past president of the Association of Chinese Geneticists in America (ACGA) (2018-2021). Currently, he is a board director of the International Society of Reproductive Genetics.
